How to read germination and purity on a seed packet

The numbers on the strip are not decoration. Here is what 82% min. and 98% purity actually commit us to.

Germination on a Manganga pack is the lab result for that lot, not a catalogue average. 82% min. means that in our test, at least 82 of 100 seeds produced a normal seedling under the conditions we print. It is not a promise that every farmer’s nursery will hit the same number if the bed is waterlogged or the seed sat in a hot godown.

Purity is the share of seed that is the named variety, free of other crop seed and inert matter after cleaning. 98% is the floor we pack against. If a sample from the same lot tests below what is printed, keep the pouch and the batch code — we retain a reference sample for the season.

Days to maturity on the strip is a field window, not a calendar date. Onion at 95–110 days assumes the season and spacing we used in our own plots. A late transplant or a cold spell will stretch it.

If the pouch has no batch code, or the print looks copied, do not plant it as Manganga seed. Ask the dealer for the lot number and match it to the pouch in your hand before you pay.
